Title (Sermon): Our Relationship with the Faith (5 of 5)
Text: Jude 1-4 (Printed) and Jude 1-25 (Presented)
1 Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: 2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. 3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Jude planned to write about salvation; but Holy Spirit redirected him to urge believers to contend for the faith (i.e., doctrine) that they received; as it was attacked from false teachers.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
Today, apostates still attempt to sneak into the church unnoticed and subsequently seek to influence, dilute, or twist the true gospel, to affirm their fleshly desires and sinful lifestyles. As believers, we must remain uncompromised in our adherence to and defense of the true gospel.

The Bible is signed, sealed, and delivered. It is the faith that is once for all delivered unto the saints. It is complete and correct as it now is. If a teaching is new, then it is not true.

Title (Sermon): Our Relationship with God’s Ministers (4 of 5)
Text: 3 John 5-12 (Printed) and 3 John 1-14 (Presented)
5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, 6 who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, 7 because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth. 9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church. 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.

Title (Sermon): Our Relationship with God via Truth and Love (3 of 5)
Text: 2 John 3-8 (Printed) and 2 John 1-13 (Presented)
3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. 5 And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

Title (Sermon): Relating to New Believers Who Formerly Offended Us (2 of 5)
Text: Philemon 8-17 (Printed) and Philemon 1-25 (Presented)
8 Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, 9 yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you—being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ— 10 I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, 11 who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me. 12 I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart, 13 whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel. 14 But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary. 15 For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, 16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. 17 If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
In jail, Paul meets Onesimus and converts him to Christ. Paul learns that he is a runaway slave from his friend Philemon. Paul writes Philemon explaining what has occurred to Onesimus; and asks Philemon to forgive Onesimus and now see him in a new way.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
We too will encounter people who have wronged us and now have come to faith in Christ. Welcome, love, forgive, and receive them! Let’s now see them differently. They are family!
Thot 1: Paul’s Greeting and Prayer (1-7)
A. His Camaraderie is Reaffirmed to Philemon (1-3)
B. His Compliments are Reiterated about Philemon (4-7)

A. The Conciliation is Exported via an Intercessory Plea to Forgive (18-21)
B. The Conclusion is Expressed via an Itinerary of Paul and a Farewell (22-25)
Transformation: How should this truth change me?
I will welcome, love, forgive, and receive those who previously hurt me but who are now born again. I see them as my divine sibling elevated in Christ with me. Yes, I receive them warmly in Jesus’ name, just as Jesus welcomed, loved, forgave, and received me!

“10 Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever. … 15 The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. … 18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them,

Tale: What is this passage talking about? What began as a family feud (between Jacob and Esau) soon engulfed two nations Israel and Edom. At the time of Israel’s captivity in Babylon, Edom mistreated Israel: celebrating her captivity, pillaging her resources, and partaking in her persecution. So via the prophet, God speaks grim judgments on Edom.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us? Today, God’s favor still rests on Israel. Increasingly, nations are joining Esau’s many descendants with a voice of condemnation of Israel and a vitriol for her destruction. Yet, God’s Word remains true! As Edom is no longer a nation, so shall all of Israel’s enemies be judged and or annihilated. When you pick a fight with Israel, you are picking a fight with God!

Text: Jeremiah 32:2, 9, 15 (Printed) and Jeremiah 32:1-44 (Presented)
2 For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. … 9 So I bought the field from Hanamel, the son of my uncle who was in Anathoth, and weighed out to him the money—seventeen shekels of silver. … 15 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.” ’

What visions might I have? What understanding will I gain? What is God’s plan and will for me now? He wants to reassure me; to talk with me; to touch me; and to strengthen me! Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Every year, the Jewish people would make three pilgrimages to Jerusalem to observe the feasts. For many, the trip was long, arduous, dangerous, and uphill (Jerusalem is elevated). Along their journey, they would sing “Songs of Ascent” (Psalms 120 through 134) in remembrance of their freedom from captivity and in anticipation of coming into the presence of God (at the Temple) and reuniting with other likeminded pilgrims! No doubt, they would invite, inspire, and engage others to join them. Their constant faithful pilgrimages would result in a great reward for them!
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
Along our spiritual pilgrimage from earth to glory, we too are reminded by this Song of Ascent to recall our freedom from sin’s bondage and to look forward to our ultimate destination to be forever in the presence of God, our Savior, and to be reunited with other believers. Let us beckon to those around us to join us in our walk of faith with God. Too, our life is sometimes long, arduous, dangerous, and uphill! But we must keep our focus on arriving at the home and reward that God has prepared for us!

Transformation: How should this truth change me?
Let us be ever mindful and thankful that God has redeemed us from sin and death; and has given us His righteousness and eternal life! Yes, life is hard; but the eternal presence of God, the gathering of all the believers, the heavenly home that is being prepared for us, and the rewards that await us are all incomparable to our present sufferings; and are worth it all! Let us call out to those on the sideline to come and join us on this spiritual trek to our heavenly home! “… oh, who will come and go with me? I am bound for the promised land.” Samuel Stennett, 1787 (Public Domain).

22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, 24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: … 28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. … 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Abraham had two sons: Ishmael (by Hagar, his bondservant) and Isaac (by Sarah, his wife). Ishmael was born as a product of impatience and interference on the part of Sarah. Conversely, Isaac was born from the promise and faithfulness of God.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
These two sons, Ishmael, and Isaac, represent the two covenants of the Bible (i.e., the Old Testament and the New Testament). The Old Testament was received at Mount Sinai by Moses and was a Law that required continuous unending works, observances, festivals, and sacrifices by its followers. The New Testament was received at Mount Calvary by Jesus Christ and was a liberating event for its followers in that it ended our labors by the once for all sacrifice of our Savior!

Text: Gen. 22:8-14 (Printed); Gen. 22:1-19 (Presented)
8 And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”
12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, [a]The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Isaac submitted to the will of God and his father. In so doing, he was a type of the Messiah, the only begotten Son of God; whom God out of His great love to men gave to be an offering and a sacrifice for their sins (John 3:16). As Christ was seen in the life of both Abraham and Isaac, might He also be seen in our lives today (Galatians 2:20)!

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Historically, Pentecost (Shavout) is a Jewish feast celebrating the giving of the Torah and the summer wheat harvest. It was celebrated 50 days after Passover and was marked by pilgrims coming to Jerusalem from all over the world to celebrate the event. Transformation: How should this truth change me?
I now understand that at His spiritual birthing of me for salvation in God’s kingdom, the fullness of the Spirit abides within and is at work on me (i.e., I get all of Him as He makes me into the persona or image of Christ via exhibiting His fruits of the Spirit); however, at His spiritual baptizing of me for service in God’s church, the fullness of the Spirit is abundant within and is at work through me (i.e., He gets all of me as He ministers by me with the power and inspiration of Christ via exercising His gifts of the Spirit)! To sum up, Christ’s Spirit Who is at work inside of me for my benefit; is now also at work outside of me for others’ benefit!

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
This is the second time that Sarah expels Hagar. About 14 or more years earlier, while pregnant with Ishmael, Sarah had done the same thing (Genesis 16). However, this time, there was no coming back home. The jeering laughter from the teenager Ishmael at Sarah and the toddler Isaac was the last straw! They were banished! Alone in the desert, with depleted supplies, Hagar is afraid that she and her son will perish. Her faith had emptied out just like her waterskin! Nevertheless, the Lord had not forgotten her, her son, or His promise to Abraham. God rescues them; and assures them of His favor.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
As moms, a distressful experience like Hagar’s is not uncommon. They bring many tears! Mothers know, when you are feeling abandoned and overwhelmed with life’s events, that God remembers His promise to you, sees your tears, and will rescue and bless you also.

3 Then the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?” And Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet.” … 7 So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” 8 Then he bowed himself, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I?” … 13 So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king’s table. Title: “The Amazing Results from Godly Giving”
Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (Printed and Presented)
6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, 13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men, 14 and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Corinth was an international hub with great wealth. In such an environment, many callous and selfish attitudes prevailed. Even in the church, charitable kindness was woefully absent. So, Paul encourages believers to be countercultural and give generously to their church and community. Paul explains to the Corinthians (and us) about the astonishing effects released via godly giving.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
Sadly, uncaring attitudes and self-centeredness still prevail. Barna reports (2022) * within the modern local church (USA) among self-identifying Christians, only 21% give 10 percent or more of their income, 54% give less than 10%, and 25% do not give to their church at all. Yet, when the truth about the blessings of generosity is finally discovered and then faithfully practiced by the believers, it blesses both the givers and the recipients in so many ways.
Thot 1: God’s Law of Reciprocity is Explained for Us (6)
Thot 2: God’s Love of Generosity is Expressed about Us (7)
Thot 3: God’s Lavishing of Prosperity is Exported upon Us (8-10)
Thot 4: God’s Liberality causes a Thanksgiving that is Exemplified through Us (11-15)
A. Our Unselfish Giving Sustains/Substantiates our Ministries, Sending God Exaltation (11-14)
B. God’s Unspeakable Gift of His Son, our Savior, the Messiah, Serves as Our Example (15)
Transformation: How should this truth change me?
I will be a blessing to others through giving and sharing of what God has entrusted to me to manage. Hereafter, I will tithe 10% of my income, and give offerings above my tithe, to my local church. Moreover, I will give to others and to worthy charitable causes as God directs me!

Text: John 21:3-6, 11, 14, 17 (Printed); John 21:1-25 (Presented)
3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. … 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. … 14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. … 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Peter and six more disciples go fishing. They fish all night but catch nothing. Jesus, unnoticed by them initially, tells them to put their net on the right side and they catch a lot. They go from “no luck” to “no lack!” This is the third time Christ appears to His disciples who, because of their fears and failures, have not yet started their ministry. Jesus then addresses Peter alone.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
Like the disciples, we too are often negligent in sharing the gospel. Perhaps, like them we become disappointed from our failures, dismayed by our fears, distracted from our focus, and disrupted by the familiar. At times, our Savior, maybe without our even noticing Him, gently nudges us personally vis His Spirit to return to Him and to resume our assigned work!

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Jesus comes to Bethany and consoles Martha and Mary, Lazarus’ sisters, who are grieving his death. While Jesus subsequently raises him from the dead; he first gives reassuring insights to Martha (and to us) about the resurrection. In just a brief amount of time (perhaps two weeks or so), Jesus would be crucified, buried, and then rise to life in His glorified body on the third day! His raising of Lazarus foreshadows His power to raise Himself (and all who believe in Him) back to life.
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
From Jesus’ words to Martha, we too can be assured of our resurrection by Christ! Death has no power over the one who believes in Christ and is alive in Him! While Lazarus’ resurrection was limited (he was raised back to mortal life; and then subsequently had to die again; awaiting the true resurrection into a glorious body), all who believe in Christ (including Lazarus) will one day be raised to a life that is immortal, incorruptible, and eternal! It will be truly glorious!

B. The Simple Possessing of the License over Death (27b)
Transformation: How should this truth change me?
Like Martha, I too believe that Jesus is the Christ of God; and I am alive now and forever in Him. Accordingly, I am assured that I too will one day be resurrected from the dead and changed from mortal to immortal (or if alive, at the Rapture)!

6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. 16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about 1three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. 20 But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
After feeding the 5,000, the crowd wants to make Jesus King! Jesus dismisses them; tells His disciples to get in a boat on the Sea of Galilee and travel to the other side, to Bethsaida; and retreats to the mountain to pray. The disciples begin rowing in a boat towards Capernaum. It soon becomes dark and stormy with waves tossing them and the wind blowing them off course. The disciples are very afraid as they are now in the middle of the sea and straining to get to land; when suddenly, in the predawn hours. Jesus comes walking on the water amid the storm! He is gladly welcomed by them into the boat which immediately makes landfall (see also Matt. 14:22-36; and Mark 6:45-51).
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
We are not exempt from life’s storms that often blow us off course! We too become frightened and it seems our struggles to get through these difficult times are futile. Pastor Tim, our former pastor, often said about life, “You are either going into a storm, in the middle of a storm, or coming out of a storm.” The good news is that Christ is with us as we enter, endure, and exit life’s storms!

And that day was the Sabbath.

Tale: What is this passage talking about?
Jesus finds a chronically ill man lying by the Pool of Bethesda. He asks if he “wants to be made whole?” The man explains that he cannot enter the stirred-up water before others get in. Jesus heals him with His spoken Word. The man, unknowingly, has experienced the stirring of the true Living Water, Jesus Christ that has come to him! The Jews criticize, rather than celebrate, the healing because it was done on the Sabbath. At a later encounter, Jesus tells him to cease sinning. The man spreads the news about Jesus!
Truth: What do these scriptures mean to us?
We often embrace religious practices or traditions (anointing oil, prayer cloths, etc.) for our healing. While these rituals can facilitate a stirring up of our faith; it is only God Who heals us. So, step into the Presence of the real Living Water today and be healed!

I will not put my faith in a prayer cloth, a bottle of oil, holy water, a religious ritual or in a someone who claims to heal. My healing is not dependent on objects or what I or others do; but, solely on what God says. I will put my faith in Jesus alone! I will forsake my sins! I will tell everyone about my Savior and Healer: Jesus Christ!

And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household. 54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” 14 Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” 15 So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” 16 And the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.” 18 Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.” And He said, “I will wait until you come back.”

Title: “Walking in Faith …”
Text: Hebrews 11:1-3, 6 (Printed & Presented)
11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. … 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
